Yesterday was Eagle Day in Denmark. The public was able to visit the nature reserves throughout the country, to see if they could spot the eagles. I decided to drive to Lille Vildmose to experience this magnificent bird, instead of staying at Vejlerne, and I was not disappointed – sort of. I did see a single Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), but it was really really far away (800 m or so). I also bodged my camera settings, so the photos turned out rather too low-resolution.
Now, at least I know where the eagles are and what time of day is the best to see them, so next time I can go there without the general public there. On the way to Lille Vildmose, I saw a Heron (Ardea cinerea) near Sebbersund overflying the road, and a couple of Buzzards (Buteo buteo) sitting on poles between Nørholm and Aalborg.
And finally – the Northern Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus) – the bringer of spring – has arrived. I saw a group of about 20-30 birds at Lille Vildmose.
The photo shows the size difference between the golden eagle and a Danish Air Force Augusta Wesland AW-101 MK512 Merlin helicopter that just happened to fly by. Those birds are HUGE!
