I received the Marumi Digital DHG Circular PL(D) Polarizing filter today. Polarizing filters, of course, removes reflections from water and glass, as well as gives the sky a more vibrant blue colour.
I am a huge fan of polarizing filters, and I have been very happy with the Hoya filters so far. However, I saw a review of the Marumi filters and they got extremely good grades. I am not talking photo-magazine style reviews, but real scientific measurements. So I ordered one for my 77mm lenses. For the last week or so, I have been waiting with excitement for the Marumi filter to arrive, and I finally got it today.
I don’t know if I should be happy or sad, though. The Marumi filter is one of the best – the reviews say so – but I just couldn’t help feeling a little disappointed with it. It’s not the optical performance of the filter itself, but more the mounting frame that bothers me a bit. The filter is extremely thin and screwing it onto the lens is kind of fiddly. I also have a slight problem with the use of this filter. Compared to the Hoya filters which rotates smoothly and gives a feeling of oil dampened bliss, the Marumi is kind of lose. Although it doesn’t, I have a feeling that it could, literally rotate on its own, just by shaking the lens about a bit.
Now, the proof of the pudding is in the eating, and I am really happy with the optical performance of this filter. It is, in my opinion, also visibly better than the Hoya equivalent, and I guess that’s what counts?
Photos will be coming as soon as we get some blue skies.
