I went to take photos of the horse races at Aalborg Væddeløbsbane yesterday. Despite cloudy weather, my photos turned out really well.
The challenge of taking horse racing photos is quite different from taking bird photos. With birds, it’s a good shot, as long as it is taken pretty close up and in focus. For horse races, focusing on a massive animal like a horse is not a problem, but instead the photo has to bring the speed, the competition and the atmosphere across to the viewer. I did not succeed well with that, if I have to say to myself, but I can see myself going there again some time when the weather is warmer (and the sun is not directly into the camera) to try again.
Also, the races I saw were harness races, where the horses trot, while pulling the jockey in a small sulky. I would have liked a proper derby with horses gallop and the jockey riding them.
