Today the weather was amazing. There is summer in the air. Unfortunately we arrived a bit after lunch, and most of the animals were less active, and far from the shore. Nevertheless, I saw a few species that I have not seen before.
The Smew (Mergellus albellus) has been spotted by bird-watchers at the nature reserve. I found this out today as we were leaving the area. It is from Northern Russia, and is rarely seen in Europe. It is in an almost 100% white camouflage colour. I will go there tomorrow morning if the weather is good to see if I can spot it.
The ‘new’ birds (new to me) were:
White Wagtail (Motacilla alba) - I first saw this bird earlier this week. Several were seen around the area today. It must have just arrived after migrating north from Southern Europe/Africa.
Northern Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus) - Seen earlier, but I managed to get a fairly decent photo from Kraptårnet.
Lark (Alauda arvensis) - Was heard but not seen.
Sheld Duck (Tadorna tadorna) – Was seen near the Visitors Center.
Other birds, but same species as yesterday, were seen too. In particular a flock of several thousands og gray geese taking off for Norway or Sweden, almost made the sky black.
